UK Schools will be given greater power to ban full-face veils in the classroom under guidelines published today. Head teachers will be able to request that Muslim girls remove the niqab - which covers the face apart from the eyes - if it interferes with teachers' ability to impart lessons.

The International Council for Press and Broadcasting is convinced that the honesty or dishonesty of media affects the mental health of the world. Freedom of expression is vital as a means of permitting all views to flourish peacefully. It is a cliché that the price of this freedom must be continual vigilance – in particular vigilance to identify and expose the encouragement of malice, war and the incident of hate speech and image.

Defiant Veil
Veil is mark of defiance, says first Muslim peer, writes Paul Stokes in the Telegraph
“The wearing of a veil is a "barrier to integration" in the western world, Britain's first Muslim peer believes. Lord Ahmed of Rotherham is against a legal ban on the niqab but insists Islam does not demand it should be worn..”

More dislike of the Veil
Chris Doyle of Caabu points out that a BBC survey has reported that 1 in 3 people in the UK would support a ban on wearing veils in public (Telegraph). Debate in the Telegraph's letters continues to focus on the question of Islam and Tolerance, and comment suggests new government strategy is required to 'win Muslim hearts and minds'.
One in three people would support a ban on Muslim women wearing veils which cover their faces in all public places, according to a survey carried out for the BBC. Members of the public were asked whether they would back the introduction by the Government of a new law imposing such a ban.A third of respondents said they would approve, compared with just over half - 56 per cent - who said they would not and just under one in 10 said they did not know.

Let people wear cross or veil

This item was sent in by Chris Doyle of Caabu:
The Archbishop of Canterbury has said that the Government must not become a 'licensing authority' that decides which religious symbols are acceptable. (Times) He fears becoming too much like France where "secularism is close to being a national religion" and classifies banning the veil as "politically dangerous."

The Veil

It is not, however, a feature of Koranic thinking. The Prophet Mohamed kept his wives unveiled. Interesting to note that the Wikepedia entry for the HIJAB or veil is repeatedly "vandelised" - presumably by Moslems who are offended by the reference to the fact that the Koran does not demand the wearing of the veil. Perverse eh?
Is the veil a source of racial confrontation, does it offend and cause offence when worn in the West? Yes. It offends me anyhow. I can't help it. It seems provocative and insulting. Now why is that? Because it demeans women? Yes but it's more than that. I find it discurteous. In so much as I can, when overseas I adopt the "when in Rome do as the Romans" approach. I expect the same from those from other cultures who settle in our countries in the West.
Furthermore, I do not believe in a multicultural society. I believe in a melting pot world. Multiculturalism has failed and needs consigning to the dustbin of history. Quickly.
